Did you know that heating and cooling account for 56% of the energy usage in an average U.S. home?  That means it’s the largest energy expense for most homes!  Unfortunately, many households aren’t aware of how much money their inefficient heating and cooling systems (HVAC systems) are losing them.  HVAC systems only 10 years old can be as much as 20% less efficient than modern systems, and that’s only if your old system has always been properly maintained.  Poorly maintained HVAC systems can also circulate dust particles throughout homes because of leaky ductwork and dirty filters, potentially aggravating your allergies.  Obviously, it’s important for both your pocketbook and potentially even your health to have an efficient, well maintained HVAC system.

Cooling:

Modern air conditioners use anywhere between 30% and 50% less energy than air conditioners from the mid 1970s.  As mentioned above, air conditioners only 10 years old can even be as much as 20% less efficient than newer models.  It’s also very important to have your air conditioner installed properly since a sloppy installation can reduce your HVAC system’s efficiency by up to 30% and even shorten its usable life.   It’s really disappointing seeing how others do that kind of work.  That’s not what Hart Heating & Cooling is about.  We’re well aware just how much money a bad installation could cost you every month.  That’s why we do things the right way the first time.

Heating:

If your furnace or boiler is 15 or more years old, it could be up to 15% less efficient than modern models.  It’s surprising how often we see inefficient heaters adding way too much to customers’ energy bills.  If you’d like to ensure that you’re heating system is saving you money, give us a call.  We can come out and make sure that everything is working to save you money.

Thermostats:

There’s a common misconception that HVAC systems work harder to get a house back to a comfortable temperature if they’ve been turned off all day.  That’s just not true.  You can save between 5% and 15% on your energy bill by dialing down your thermostat when you’re not home.  Unlike the old days of manual thermostats, programmable thermostats ensure that you’re always getting those savings.  Some modern thermostats can even be controlled from your smart phone!  A programmable thermostat is one of the simplest ways to save each month on your energy bill.

Maintenance:

Last but certainly not least, proper maintenance of your HVAC system is critical to keep your system efficient, dust-free, and healthy.  You wouldn’t ignore the maintenance on your car, so you definitely shouldn’t hesitate to maintain your biggest monthly energy expense.  Just like your car, HVAC systems need proper maintenance to keep them running properly.  They’re meant to have seasonal tune-ups to keep them running like they’re brand new.  That means checking combustion efficiency, refrigerant charge, belt tension, cleaning evaporator and condenser coils, and inspecting ductwork for leaks.  Unlike the efficiency savings above, there’s just no telling how much money could be lost because of a poorly maintained system.  Even the most efficient air conditioning and heating units aren’t able to provide savings if they’re connected to a poorly maintained system.  Give us a call to make sure you aren’t losing money every month because of maintenance.
